Inspecting your Fork Truck for Safety
A fork truck, like any industrial machine, should be used with care. Unlike a car, a fork truck is steered from the rear wheel and hence has a different center of balance. Anybody working within the vicinity of a fork truck and anybody utilizing this equipment should understand safe operating measures and workplace safety guidelines.
Safe operation of a forklift prior to using it would include a visual inspection. Worn tires and fuel leaks are potential dangers that an operator has to inspect. The forks, lifts and the overhead guard should be thoroughly inspected. The safety handle should be used just when the forklift is being mounted.
The alarms, lights and horns should be inspected to ensure that they are working well. Gauges and monitors should be adjusted properly. The seat should be adjusted and safety belt fastened before starting the truck.
To avoid tipping the equipment, take turns cautiously and always choose the low rate speed when driving. If the load blocks the driver's vision, the truck should be driven in reverse gear. Be aware of the location of any obstacles and pedestrians while driving.
The driver should always sit within the cage enclosure and keep all body parts inside the vehicle to avoid any chance of injury. The forks must be kept several inches above the ground while driving. Never raise or lower lifts while you are driving or the truck could become unstable. Do not permit anyone to walk under lift when the engines are running.
Basic driving safety includes stopping at intersections and watching for approaching traffic. It is a good idea to sound the horn before proceeding as well as occasionally when operating within aisles. That way, you would warn any approaching person to your presence.
Operator Environment
Operators have an efficient and safe place to work from in the Spirit Delta cab. The particular design of the cab comes as a result of extensive study into the operators working conditions. The main objective is to be able to offer optimum visibility with no forward corner posts and big glass areas unobstructed to keep the field of vision clear. The ergonomically designed instrument panel is extremely comfortable and gently rounded. This particular area has also been designed with an unobstructed clear view of all essential information, so as to keep the operator functioning as effectively as she or he could.
Due to the insulated mounting to the chassis, overall noise levels and vibration levels are kept low. The hydraulic controls and the operators' seat are all independently adjustable in order to maintain an optimum working position. In addition, the steering wheel and related panel is adjustable for utmost comfort. There are 2 multi-functioned ergonomically positioned and simple to operate levers which are offered for gear changing, windscreen wipers, the horn and window washers.
A ventilation/heating unit ensure a comfortable cab temperature for the operator. The incoming air is replaced by an air filter. This is easily replaceable and the unit slides out afterwards to make serviceability an easy option. The machinery has a robust 3-speed fan for heating, cooling, defrosting and recirculation. As an additional option, air conditioning can be fitted.
Instrumentation
The instrument panel in the spirit delta cab has been logically grouped and are all within easy reach. The standard instruments which comprise: warning lamps, low engine and gearbox lubrication oil pressure, low brake pressure, high coolant temperature, high gearbox oil temperature and applied parking brake. Moreover, gauges display values for gearbox oil pressure, engine coolant, fuel quantity and operating time.
The ECS or Electronic Control System monitoring is one of the key options on the 8 to 10 tonne trucks. These units make it easier to supervise the equipment.
